‘Meadows on the Map’ is a master thesis in urban design produced in the spring of 2013 at Aalborg University.
Addressing the issues of social deprivation and stigmatisation within ‘the Meadows’ in Nottingham, the thesis presents a physically anchored strategy for transforming the residential area into a vibrant city neighbourhood.
Based on the immanent qualities within the Meadows, the strategy consists of a short-term and long-term transformation scheme.
By introducing a new core structure of ‘area spines’ and programmatic ‘nerve centres’ the short-term transformation forms the cornerstone of the intervention. This first part of the strategy is highly contextual, striving to establish a new connection between the Meadows and its surroundings. Build on the core structure the long-term transformation introduces a vision for a widespread redevelopment of the whole neighbourhood.
In its totality Meadows on the Map showcases how an overall strategy for physical transformation can be translated into small- and large scale design interventions, resulting in the revitalisation of an exposed neighbourhood.
