This Master’s thesis investigates Location-Based Scheduling and how this can create valuefor the Danish contractor A. Enggaard.The thesis begins with a thematization of the building industry and which challenges itfaces. The building industry generates about 6-9 % of Denmark’s Gross Domestic Product,but it has been found that the building industry is lagging in productivity. It also turns outthat construction projects in Denmark often exceed budget and time due to poor planning.The most commonly used method for time and resource planning in construction projectsis activity-based scheduling, the Critical Path Method (CPM), since it was introduced inthe late 1950s. Over the years, it has proven to be a very effective method for schedulingprojects. However, the CPM method has been criticized, especially in construction projects,for not adequately supporting construction management during execution and for notcreating a continuous and thus better financial flow of resources.Based on the thematization and one initial interview, the following problem formulationwas prepared:How can location based scheduling create value for A. Enggaard?The thesis’ empirical data is collected through qualitative interviews with project managersfrom A. Enggaard. Secondary literature has been prepared through a literature study onthe subject.The location-based scheduling (LBS) method has also been developed with the purpose toplan and manage workflow and with the addition of resources can therefore be expected toprovide a useful alternative to CPM. Although LBS has a long history and is well-groundedin theory, the method generally has not had much interest in the Danish building industry.An analysis of the interviews was conducted and compared with the findings in theliterature study. A solution as a product for the problem formulation is presented at theend of the thesis.This thesis summarizes the results of the application of LBS on one of A. Enggaard’sprojects during construction. The purpose has been to evaluate the result of using LBSinstead of CPM. The study concludes, in accordance with statements from the projectmanagers from A. Enggaard, that the main benefits of using LBS are an improved overviewof the schedule, a clearer focus on workflow and resources, and a better basis for projectcontrol. Theoretically, it has been shown that the project execution time is shortened byfive weeks, without changing the recourses, but simply by using location-based scheduling.
