This master thesis is a study of the challenges and opportunities women face when it comes to investing. Today there are almost as many female shareholders as men. However, women own just 33 percent of private equity assets and economic equality is still not achieved. Therefore, this project looks at the differences in terms of how we manage our income and how our gender affects our choice of investment strategies. I have set out to examine women's relationships to investment with the hope of being able to contribute to a wider understanding of women's approaches to finance and investment. What investment strategies do women use? What entrance do they have to the field? And how does the positioning of women affect the economic field? To answer these questions, I used methods of qualitative nature. My data consists of interviews with 7 female investors as well as an interview with the co-founder of Moneypenny Linnéa Schmidt and an interview with Consumer Economist at Nordea Ann Lehmann. To gain deeper knowledge on the subject I decided to start investing myself and keep a logbook of my reflections. The empirical material is analyzed using the theories of Pierre Bourdieu and Judith Butler, as well as research by Barbara Stewart. A main conclusion from the analysis is that women want to be independent participants in the economic field, but that women as a group are still governed by cultural heritage and social rules and norms, as expressed in the choice of passive, ethical and cautious investment strategies. The women I have interviewed, due to structural and cultural conditions, do not have the same positioning opportunities in the economic field as men. The women, however, represent a movement of women who have broken with traditional norms around women and investment. Thus, they are examples of an ongoing process of change, where the norms for women's positioning and opportunities for action in the economic field change and expand. Having a strategy based on ethics and morals and a passive long-term action plan does not yield a quick return, and women do not move the economic balance of power between the sexes in the short run. There is therefore still a long way to go for economic equality. However, women's ever-growing interest in investment and economics will, over time, change the doxa of the field and strengthen the position of women in the field.
