Aim: This master thesis is based on a single case-study, aiming to investigate the application of Lindstrøm et al.’s (2020) model as an assessment tool to investigate the perception and management of pain for a woman with cancer during music therapy sessions.
Background: During my 9th semesters internship at an oncology section, I became aware that I needed a tool to describe and define the pain condition for cancer patients with complex pain, whom in addition to the physical pain, resulting from both their cancer illness and the treatment, are also affected by social, physical and existential challenges.
Method: Since Lindstrøm et al.’s model is developed as a tool to showcase palliative music therapy. To adjust the model as a tool for analysis and assessment, some revisions have been made, based on Van Deurzen`s theory of the four dimensions of personal worldview(Van Deurzen, 2012), including my own evaluation. Based on terms from the model, an analysis of the transcriptions of conversations and the music during therapy has been conducted, and afterwards coded and classified according to needs, resources and pain conditions. The results from the analysis were transferred into a circle diagram, to illustrate the patient's condition of pain, well-being divided into needs, resources and pain. These three sections are further divided into physical, social, psychological and existential areas. The suitability of the Lindstrøm et al.’s model as a tool to define the patient's pain condition, are being discussed and interpreted according to the method selections, the analysis findings and theory.
Results/conclusion: This study concludes that Lindstrøm et al.'s model is a suitable tool to define pain conditions for a cancer patient within this case-study. Some further revisions and re-adjustments for the model need to be made, according to the purpose of defining and describing pain conditions. The results indicate a development and a connection between pain, needs and resources both according to music and conversations in therapy. Thus, they can define pain for a patient who is only scarcely expressing pain through words. The results cannot describe different pain reactions such as fear of death and the importance of the involvement of a spouse in the music therapy. The study shows a potential for further investigation in using the model as an assessment tool in clinical music therapy.
