This thesis is purposed with investigating how renovations of residential areas, in Aalborg East, Denmark, will influence crime rates, experienced resident fear, stigmatisation of the area and how these three parameters correlate with the expectations outlined by the boligsociale helhedsplan. The thesis utilises a theoretical approach and aims at validating the theoretical framework through collected empirical material. The titel of this thesis is; “I fear this is a nice way to clean up amongst the residents” – a criminological casestudy of the expectations to the future Aalborg East. Through this thesis, it could be established that by taking into account, crime prevention techniques in the renovation projects, the local police and local resident representative found there to be less crime, which correlates with the expectation outlined in the boligsociale helhedsplan. These findings are corroborated and analysed using the rutine activity theory by Cohen & Felson and the unformed social control theory by Flemming Balvig. In relation to experienced resident fear, this thesis found that signals of crime and none-self experienced crime, are more important factors than the actual crime rate in the current area. Furthermore, the empirical material introduced in this thesis, brings to light that deviant behaviour is a much greater problem, than the actual crime. The majority of this behaviour involves hazardous and noisy driving of mopeds, which seemingly have a bigger influence on the experienced fear, than the actual crime rate. Further more, one of the expectations outlined in the boligsociale helhedsplan, was to change the year long stigmatisation of Aalborg East. Through the collected empirical material, it could be established that one of the reasons for the lasting stigmatisation of the area, where bad publicity in the media. The informants used in the thesis explain that the media generally covers the area in a negative way and that the negative media coverage would have to stop, for the stigmatisation to go away. Finally it is uncovered that the renovations of the area, might attract more resourceful residents, which is also one of the expectations outlined by the boligsociale helhedsplan. In turn, this do seemingly also lower crime rates and decrease the experienced resident fear. However, the addition of more resourceful residents might contribute to widening the gap amongst the residents of Aalborg East. The empirical material of this thesis consists of 1 focus-group interview and 4 semi- structured interviews. The thesis has a deductive approach and the survey design is a case- study.
