PortLandscape – an industrial bath is a dissertation in architecture, performed by Andreas Siem-Jørgensen. The
project refl ects an underlying confl ict between the city and the industry in general as perceived by the author:
The citizens are often dissatisfi ed with the sight, smells and noise from the industry and the relationship is not
improved by a clear distinction between city and industry – both activitywise and in appearance.
By developing a public bath in the middle of Aalborg Portland, a major international producer of concrete, the
project seeks to integrate urban life and industry and thereby enhancing the citizens positive feelings towards
the industry. The main focus of the design is the visitors’ experience of the indoor rooms, different bath facilities
within an industrial context. A number of experiments with light, concrete and chalk are therefore carried out in
the design process. A process which is highlighted during the whole project.
The fi nal design is a simplistic Scandinavian building, inspired by features from the ancient Roman baths, the
Finnish sauna and the Turkish ‘hammam’. Concrete and chalk are widely used in the building as well as in the interior
stressing the industrial surroundings. The building has a curvy and straight idiom and makes its way down
a steep slope overlooking turquoise blue water. The building ends by embracing a small part of the lake, which is
used as a swimming pool.
