As more countries are focusing on the implementation of clean and renewable energy sources into electric distribution systems, decentralized distribution systems such as Microgrid are
becoming more popular and feasible solution. With rapid penetrations of renewables energy sources, the inertia of the system will suffer due to inertialess characteristics of renewable energy sources. A solution to the problem is provided by modeling of power converter to emulate the behavior of the synchronous machine. The standard virtual synchronous machine uses cascade control loops to regulate voltage and current, where voltage control is outer loop with frequency bandwidth an order of magnitude lower than inner current control loop. This project is focused on developing Model Predictive Control (MPC) which uses multiple control targets integrated into single cost function, therefore, reducing control loops which improves the transient response of the virtual synchronous machine. Furthermore, the novel developed MPC is compared with cascade control. Experimental results of the novel developed MPC in islanded parallel Virtual Synchronous Machine (VSM) operation are obtained in laboratory.
