The purpose of this master’s thesis study, is to examine and map what problems and underlying challenges which have been experienced amongst the sports teachers in the Danish gymnasium (Secondary education), while implementing the demands of the curriculum which have been reformed back in 2005. The study was conducted by interviewing six sports teachers who also were the sports-profession chairman on each of their schools. These chairmen would thereby be functioning as the spokesperson for all the sports teachers on each specific school. When the interviews had been conducted they were partially transcribed (Meaning that only the statements which where relevant for the study where transcribed) and then coded and categorized. When coded and categorized, the data could be mounted onto a metamatrix, which then could be used to visualize the results of the investigation. From the study there were found seven underlying challenges (four of these were identified before the beginning of the study and were the main focus in the initial interviews, the rest of the categories were added during the study), from where most of the problems which the sports teachers experienced. The seven areas which were found were: How the curriculum was formulated, The amount of funds and hours given to achieve the demands of the curriculum, How well the teachers were motivated for the task, How well the teachers competences were to complete the given assignment, How well the students were, How later changes in the curriculum would affect the teachers and lastly how the internal structure or organizing could be a problem in some cases. What the study discovered was that most of the schools had experienced problems within the category of the internal structure or organizing. This was mainly due to an issue of how classes in sport were structured in a way were it wasn’t compatible with the new curriculum’s demand of participation of certain AT-courses (an interdisciplinary course). Other problems where identified with the students and the amount of hours of lections which were given to fulfill the curriculum. There were in general fewer problems associated with the formulations of the curriculum, and the teachers also seemed motivated to work with the reformed curriculum. There were a few problems pointed out about how the changes of the curriculum had affected the teacher’s motivation, but these problems had in general seemed to pass. There were also identified some few problems with the competences of the teachers, but this was mainly due to a lack of continuing education of the teachers. Lastly the students seemed in general to be both less motivated and in a poorer condition throughout the last couple of years, which of course would affect how well the sports classes would go.
