This study presents an intensive investigation into the increasingly prevalent phenomenon of the gap year, examining its varied and often profound effects on the participants. Utilizing a phenomenological research design, the study conducts in-depth interviews based on 17 individual lifelines of returned gap year participants, capturing a wide range of experiences and potential life-altering implications. The study aims to address the core questions of variability in the experiences of gap year participants and the potential for life-changing transformational experience alongside a risk of lasting negative impacts. Our findings reveal an array of experiences reflecting the postmodern individualistic nature of gap years. The academic significance of our research lies in its capacity to fill the knowledge void in gap year studies, and its potential to stimulate further research into this increasingly influential up-and-coming social trend. Our study comprehensively explores the gap year experience and contributes to a better understanding of its psychological, sociological, and educational impacts.
