This master thesis examines the unemployed, vulnerable, young citizens’ own experiences. What they point out as essential strengths and challenges about, how the social enterprise Grennessminde can improve their position and opportunities to bring them closer to get a ´real job´ and thereby entering the labour market.
The existing research in this field is limited and there is no focus on the perspective of the citizen, which is considered as an important source to get knowledge of what works in the employment effort, when the political agenda is to encourage vulnerable young citizens to enter the labour market.
The thesis is based on philosophical hermeneutic scientific theoretical approach with a single-case study as research design. For the collection of the empirical data, we have chosen a qualitative meth-odology, where we combine the participant-observation method with the interview method. The study consists of participant-observation from three different places at Grennessminde and from seventeen semi-structured interviews with the young citizens from Grennessminde.
The theoretical framework for the analysis consists of Axel Honneth´s Theory of Recognition and Erving Goffman´s Interactional theory. We have decided to use an abductive research process so our empirical patterns thereby can be analytical generalized. The validity presupposes that the chosen the-oretical concepts from Honneth and Goffman will be challenged, interpreted and reconsidered in relation to the empirical patterns in our research.
The main findings from our research show Grennessminde, as a social enterprise, can be an alterna-tive form of inclusion for vulnerable, young citizens in the labour market. Grennesminde, as an or-ganization, is well suited to integrate vulnerable, young people closer to the labour market. From the young citizens' perspective, our research shows this is done by: the experience of carrying out relevant tasks, the interaction with the other young people within the group, the learning process and the de-velopment of own resources.
An essential element of the effort at Grennessminde is that most of the informers see Grennessminde as their occupation. Other findings show that the vulnerable, young feel included and accepted for whom they are, which is essential for Grennessminde as social enterprise.
In conclusion, our thesis shows that the main force within the social enterprise Grennessminde is that vulnerable, young peoples´ position as employment can be improved and their life quality en-hanced. This means Grennessminde, as a social enterprise, gives vulnerable people, with a poor work-ing capacity sufficiency to enter the education system or the labour market.
On the other hand, our research shows that there are challenges connected with the effort in the so-cial enterprise Grennessminde. Here it is essential for the organization to find a balance between the social work and the understanding of business at ordinary market terms. At the same time it is a cen-tral strength that Grennessminde as social enterprise can combine these aspects to provide a meaning-ful effort for the vulnerable, young citizens.
In summary; to ensure the employment effort for vulnerable, young people is successful, it is im-portant that the social enterprise Grennessminde does not become a pretext, but is seen as a stepping stone for the vulnerable, young people to enter the labour market.
