This Master thesis addresses the issues of collaboration in distributed web based learning environments. It treats the Sixth Form Colleges in Greenland as its case study. On the basis of fundamental research, it describes the problems of knowledge management faced by the teachers and presents recommendations on how to overcome these problems. Greenland, the largest island in the world, houses five Sixth Form Colleges with a total of approximately 100 teachers. Due to the particular geography of Greenland, the colleges are remote and isolated, and teachers have next to no contact with teachers from the other colleges. The Master thesis argues that ‘special Greenlandic circumstances’ such as rapid replacement of teachers, small and isolated staffrooms, a large majority of Danish speaking teachers in a Greenlandic speaking environment, and highly limited possibilities of further teacher training programmes or course activity make it beneficial for teachers to participate in CSCL, i.e. Computer Supported Collaborative Learning. Through questionnaires, interviews and appreciative inquiry workshops, the project investigates the present situation at the Greenlandic Sixth Form Colleges from the level of the teacher to the principals and ministry officials. The hypothesis is that the teachers will profit from participating in knowledge management with one another in order to overcome the professional isolation experienced at the colleges. Etienne Wenger’s theory of communities of practices is applied to describe the professional relationship between the teachers. The latest literature on digital portfolios is being discussed in order to design a web based solution to engage communities of practices on the Internet.
