This project examines the psychological reasons behind the individual’s accept of unhealthy working conditions. The main focus is why the individual choses to work under these conditions without taken any actions. Inspired by our own work-related experiences and a literary exploration this phenomenon is analysed and discussed using an exemplary case study, which illustrate the phenomena in a realistic manner. Using two theoretical perspectives the phenomena is further analysed through different ways of understanding the individual’s actions and choices. The first theoretical perspective represents a critical social theory, where Rasmus Willigs theory explains the phenomena through socially created processes that influence the individual’s accept of unhealthy working conditions. Using this approach the individual’s accept is seen as inevitably affected by neoliberal tendencies such as competitive and individualistic behaviour. The other perspective represents an existential phenomenology approach, where Maurice Merleau-Ponty and his theory of body perception explains the psychological processes that affect the individual’s actions and choices. In using this approach, the individual’s accept is understood through the bodily experience and perception of the unhealthy working conditions, which occur unconsciously and automatically. Furthermore, the theoretical perspectives are used in a thematic discussion regarding the individual’s freedom or determinism in relation to the social tendencies and conscious and unconscious processes. It is concluded that the reasons behind the individual’s accept can be explained through a mutually affected relationship between the neoliberal tendencies and the individual. In addition to this, the reasons behind the acceptance can be understood as a form of unconscious and automatic bodily accept, in which the individual may not be aware of its acceptance. The general conclusion of this phenomenon is therefore the complexity in understanding the psychological reasons behind the individual’s accept of unhealthy working conditions and that a comprehensive understanding is essential in studying this phenomenon. Furthermore, it is concluded that the individual possesses, in some degree, freedom in their acceptance of unhealthy working conditions in their ability to reflect and their critical position towards the working conditions. However, the social tendencies and the body’s automatic perception will always affect the individual’s behavior and choices.
