The concept of the Nordic tone is often seen in the description of jazz with a Nordic origin. It is mainly used when the music is claimed to hold special Nordic musical qualities. The term is not well-defined, which can be seen from the general use in reviews, band profiles, etc. The aim of this dissertation is to explore the musical features associated with the Nordic tone. Jazz musicians’ approach to the Nordic tone is of interest because the musicians know the musical craftsmanship well, and are especially qualified to give clues towards the parameters of the music that contribute to the Nordic tone. Therefore, the two musicians Hans Ulrik Jensen and Bo Stief has been interviewed, as both have been in contact with the Nordic tone in their own musical work. The interview material and selected literature from books, magazines, newspaper articles and jazz magazines results in multiple interpretations of the Nordic tone. Also the musical interaction in a jazz combo in the American jazz style is characterized, since the Nordic jazz has its roots in the American jazz tradition. These two sections, together with the analysis of three pieces of jazz music with a Danish origin, constitute the basis for a discussion of the Nordic tone as a whole. The study culminates in a characterization of the Nordic jazz musician. These characteristics describe which features of Nordic jazz music are associated with the Nordic tone, and in connection with this, which features of American jazz the Nordic jazz musician will choose to opt. For example the Nordic oriented jazz musician will often choose not to use the standard repertoire and the harmonies and melodic style associated with American jazz. Other aspects of the American jazz are preserved, such as improvisation. Nordic jazz musicians often seek simplicity and lyrical expression and have the atmospheric and image-generating musical expression as an aesthetic goal. The differing interpretations of the Nordic tone make it difficult to define the concept in a narrow sense.
