Abstract
The present study is focusing on one outcome of the process of migration: the interethnic marriages. Muslim minorities in Denmark have been experiencing negative discourse, therefore the aim of this study is to explore how this negativity is reflected on a lower level, in the marriages between Danish nationals and Muslim immigrants.
This qualitative study will base the empirical data on interviews with two couples living in Aalborg, Denmark, making the nature of the research a case study, using the replication design. The structure of the analysis will comprise both the theories discussed in the Theory chapter, and the literature review. In the first part of the analysis, through 7 main themes discussed in the interviews, the study aims to explore the interaction and dynamics in the marriage, cultural identity and belonging. The second part will be focused on the quantitative literature preceding this study, which predominantly analyzes challenges and hindrances in interethnic marriages. These challenges will be explored through the interviews as well.
The scope of this study is to conclude if cultural differences play in important role in the marriages if interethnic couples, and explore if there are other incentives as well for arguments. According to the literature review, cultural differences create obstacles in a relationship, therefore, by applying another methodological approach, this study might have a different outcome.
