This thesis investigates what runaway ads can tell us about conflicts in the Danish West Indies by examining runaway ads from The Royal Danish American Gazette which was published in Christiansted on St. Croix from 1770 to 1801. This thesis also seeks to supplement existing research on runaway ads from the Danish West Indies, since the runaway ads from the Danish West Indies rarely have been the subject of historians, despite the fact that historians for a long time have undertaken extensive and profound studies in runaway ads from other colonies. As will be demonstrated in the historiography, many studies exist on the subject of marronage and runaway ads. These studies show, that marronage could be perceived and chased in many different ways, which could vary depending on the geography and resources the slaves had at hand. For instance has Nevill A. T. Hall argued, that grand marronage from the Danish West Indies tended to mean maritime marronage, because the slaves that were seeking permanent desertion of their owners had very limited possibilities of finding it on the small Danish islands, where all the forests had been cut down to make room for the plantations. There by the slaves on the Danish islands enjoyed none of those advantages, slaves on many other islands had of finding freedom in the neighboring regions where large maroon societies existed. The historiography also shows that the runaway ads are an immense source to information about slavery and that they can be examined in a lot of different ways. This thesis establishes like the studies in the historiography that runaway ads can tell us numerous things about the slaves that had run away. But most importantly this thesis establishes that the runaway ads from The Royal Danish American Gazette can in fact tell us about conflicts in the Danish West Indies. The runaway ads make these conflicts evident just by existing, since the mere existence of a runaway ad indicates that a slave has run away and a slaveowner has called for the slave. Furthermore does a study of the runaway ads show that many of the slaves that had run away were carrying different marks on their bodies that also indicated a conflict between the slaves and the slaveowners. By the end of my analysis, I will also discuss how the results and conclusions I reach by examining runaway ads from the Danish West Indies fit into the patterns concluded by other historians for other geographical areas as shown in the historiography.
