The existence of authenticity on the touristic scene has been quiered by various tourism scholars and the discussion whether authenticity is obtainable is never ending. This thesis clarifies the different scholarly positions towards the concept of authenticity. It furthermore categorizes them on the basis of a text by Wang that uses the philosophical approaches of objectivism, constructivism, post-modernism and existentialism and their idea of authenticity. On the basis of these, both a case study and an interview study are conducted in order to test the hypothesis carried out in the start of the thesis that puts authenticity into a post-modern context. Within this post-modern understanding of authenticity, it is claimed that it does not exist in a tourism context.
