This thesis describes to development and design of a new Olympic Volleyball Arena. Revolving around the forthcoming Olympic games in Tokyo 2020, this thesis seeks to discuss, and give a solution to how to design large scale sport architecture in the ambiance of the Olympic games as well as in a local context.

The Ariake Arena will during the Olympic games host indoor volleyball and basketball for the Paralympics. After the games, it will still be used for national and international Volleyball matches, and will also function as a local gymnasium.
To challenge the general typology and aesthetic of sport architecture, the project is rooted in the traditional tectonic theory of Gottfried Semper. Using Sempers elements of architecture as an understanding of architecture, has led to a design with a clear distinction between the elements, which in relation to each other create a functional architecture.

The new Ariake Arena will be a recreational hotspot for the Ariake area, offering a waterfront, park areas, shops, a local gymnasium and centrally a main hall capable of hosting 15.000 spectators.
