This thesis involves an analysis of the load ca-
pacity of slender IPE160 steel columns limited
by global instability, by means of analyti cal
and numerical calculati ons. The analyti cal
calculati ons will be conducted in correspon-
dence to the current [DS/EN-1993-1-1, 2007]
standard, while the numerical analysis will
be performed in the commercial soft ware
Abaqus. The calculati ons are limited to uni-
axial compressed, simple supported columns,
subjected to a variety of imperfecti ons.
The load capacity is compared with ex-
perimental data found in literature and the
model uncertainti es are determined. The
results obtained in the project are used to
calculate reliability index and parti al safety
factors, by FORM which is verified through
Monte Carlo Simulati on. Subsequently the
calculated parti al safety factors are discussed
and a calibrati on is conducted.
The column behavior is reviewed conti n-
uously throughout the project, and a history
review with State-of-the-Art are reviewed
in order to assess the influence on current
standards.
