Abstract

This master project aims to explore the charisma and leadership of Inger Støjberg, as well as whether it exhibits any populist characteristics. In order to gain this understanding, this paper draws upon various populist theories, including those proposed by Cas Mudde and Rovira Kaltwasser regarding populism and leadership. Additionally, leadership theories by Max Weber and Takis S. Pappas are incorporated. The analysis involves examining different empirical materials, such as Støjberg's speeches and interviews conducted with her. The findings of this master's paper reveal that Støjberg displays populist traits and possesses charismatic abilities. Her ability to mobilize followers is based on a polarizing approach, where she creates a division between 'us and them' concerning the elite and foreigners. Her leadership style is also characterized as charismatic and populist, enabling her to use language that is understandable to all citizens. This has made it easier for her to attract a broader spectrum of voters while simultaneously trying to present herself as part of the ordinary population. Støjberg's populist approach is evident through her ability to appeal to popular concerns and create a polarizing rhetoric that promotes an 'us and them' narrative. Her leadership is built on charismatic appeal, where she manages to appear as a credible representative of the people and their interests. Her ability to communicate clearly and directly through common language has strengthened her capacity to mobilize voters and gain a significant following. Her focus on strengthening the connection between the outskirts and the rest of the country has resonated with many voters who feel overlooked by the political elite. Her political messages about infrastructure, job opportunities, and local institutions appeal to those experiencing challenges in the outskirts.
