Abstract The self-representation of politicians as both humans and competent politicians is more important than ever before, which is why I find it interesting and useful to investigate the balance between the private and the public content in the political communication. This Master thesis examines political communication on Facebook and the use of content that is extremely private in nature. The purpose of this examination is to gain an understanding of how the private content is communicated and how it is re-contextualized by respectively the media and the receivers on Facebook. Furthermore, the purpose of this examination is to explain how the use of extremely private content affects the understanding of the boundary between the private- and the public sphere. In order to gain knowledge on this matter, two cases are being investigated in this Master thesis. The content of these cases is the empirical data, on which the examination is based. Each of the cases includes a Facebook post, which is posted by two different Danish politicians. Each case also includes two Facebook comments and a news article. The theoretical approach in this Master thesis is based on the work of Erving Goffman, Joshua Meyrowitz and Stig Hjarvard. This Master Thesis concludes that it is beneficial for the politicians to use extremely private content in their communication. The use of extremely private content enhances the politicians’ authenticity, and thereby the degree of authority. The use of Facebook gives the politician a greater control over the representation of the extremely private content. This means that there is a continuous battle between the media and the politicians in terms of who should decide, where the boundary between the public- and the private sphere should be.
