Abstract
Mange adfærdsmønstre ligner snyd i andre videospil.
Cheating has long been part of video games. Location-based games, which use a player’s physical position, raise new questions about why and how people cheat. This thesis examines cheating in Pokémon GO to understand what motivates players and how cheating occurs. We use a mixed-method approach, combining different types of data and analysis, to build both a broad and detailed picture. Our results identify several factors that drive players to cheat. Many behaviors resemble cheating seen in other video games. However, some players remove the location-based element by manipulating their phone’s GPS to appear as if they are elsewhere. We also find that players’ views on what counts as cheating vary depending on whether they see Pokémon GO as a multiplayer or single-player experience.
