Dette speciale undersøger Per Olov Enquists korte roman Nedstörtad ängel (1985), der er undertekstet som en kærlighedsroman, med særligt fokus på det kristne kærlighedsbegreb agape. This thesis examines Per Olov Enquist’s short novel Nedstörtad ängel (1985), subtitled “a love novel,” with a particular focus on the Christian concept of love known as agape. Through close reading grounded in Anders Nygren’s theology and supplemented by concepts from Susan Lanser (the author’s echo) and Poul Behrendt (the double contract), the analysis explores how agape appears in the novel’s relationships and how the boundary between fiction and reality is thematized. The core question is how agape manifests across the novel’s constellations and to what extent agape can be understood as a guiding theme. The analysis suggests the clearest expression of agape in the story of Pasqual Pinon and his extra head, Maria, while the relationship among K, the wife, and the boy tests agape and renders it more ambiguous; elements of agape can also be discerned in the case of Ruth Berlau and Bertolt Brecht. This indicates that agape is not an either–or phenomenon but may appear in degrees and mixed forms. In the discussion, the novel is read alongside Enquist’s autobiographically inflected works Another Life and The Book of Parables to illuminate links between love, grace, the author’s contemporaneous struggle with alcoholism, and his missionary upbringing, while acknowledging the debated status of these works as autobiography. The thesis also addresses other central motifs and narrative strategies, including depictions of the human and the monstrous, the motif of heads, boundaries and infinity, and the creating role of the narrating “I.” Overall, Nedstörtad ängel is read as an attempt to approach wordless love.
