Abstract
How do the experiences and institutions inherited from the communist period continue to shape democracy in the Czech Republic today? This thesis asks how the country’s post-communist legacies can help explain the current state of its democracy. To guide the analysis, I draw on Milada A. Vachudova’s theory from Europe Undivided (2005) to examine the legacies surrounding the Czech Republic’s democratization. Methodologically, I use process-tracing, as outlined by Derek Beach and Rasmus B. Pedersen, to follow the step-by-step causal mechanisms from the start of democracy to the emergence of populist movements (political actors that claim to speak for "the people" against established elites).
