Abstract

This thesis analyzes the HBO Max series Our Flag Means Death as a case of queer representation in contemporary media. Rather than only listing queer characters, it applies Parsemain’s idea of “TV as pedagogy,” which treats television as something that teaches audiences through stories and role models. The study looks at queerness as more than sexuality or gender identity—also as ways of living, relating, and imagining better futures. The pirate ship Revenge is read through José Esteban Muñoz’s concept of a “queer utopia,” an imagined space where people can try out freer, more accepting forms of community. The series both presents and challenges dominant forms of masculinity, and it raises questions about “identity alignment” (when a character’s identity matches that of performers and writers) versus “identity juxtaposition” (when a mismatch is used to create a useful contrast).
