Investigating the sociogeographic composition of Aalborg from 1860 to 1901, my thesis is based on developing a historical GIS (HGIS) database. The database incorporates censuses from 1860, 1880, and 1901 linked to manually vectorised historical geodata based on geographic references at street and plot levels. To reduce the spatial resolution of the census data, I classified 12,013 households based on the profession of household heads and proportions of servants. Shannon entropy, a measure of disorder, was central in assessing segregation across three spatial levels of aggregation. Notably, lower entropy was closely associated with a higher prevalence of working-class households, indicating lower social status, and conversely, higher entropy suggested higher social status. Between 1860 and 1880, the inner city of Aalborg became homogenised, likely due to significant worker influx, while outer streets experienced heterogenization. In contrast, between 1880 and 1901, central Aalborg became heterogenized while the peripheries near the railway in 1901 were highly homogeneous, revealing residential segregation of lower-status jobs from the city core to the outskirts. In the case of Aalborg, this suggests that contrary to Sjobergs pre-industrial model, industrialization may have enhanced rather than dissolved center-periphery segregation. Evidence of segregation at micro and meso scales was also found.
