Abstract
Formålet med dette studie var at undersøge, hvorvidt et fire måneders ophold på Nordjyllands Idrætshøjskole (NIH) kunne virke sundhedsfremmende på de tilstedeværende elever. For at klarlægge dette, blev der lavet en sundhedsprofil på NIH`s elever ved begyndelsen af opholdet, og igen fire måneder senere. Testpersonerne bestod af 4 mænd og 13 kvinder (alder: 19,4 ± 1,3 år; højde: 172,8 cm. ± 10,3; vægt: 64,3 kg. ± 10,4). Sundhedsprofilen bestod af konditest (Coopers test), YMCA sit-and-reach test, impedansmåling, armstrækninger, bench trunk-curl, håndgrebsstyrke, hvilepuls, blodtryk og blodkolesterol. Testpersonerne oplevede en signifikant forøgelse af mængden af fysisk aktivitet i løbet af de fire måneders ophold, men dette resulterede dog kun i en signifikant forbedring af fleksibilitet hos kvinderne. Det fire måneders ophold på NIH har for testgruppen i højere grad været sundhedsforebyggende end sundhedsfremmende. For at få dette bekræftet er det dog nødvendigt at lave opfølgning på testpersonerne i en årrække.
Introduction: The purpose of this study is to examine if Nordjyllands Idrætshøjskole (NIH) can play a role in promotion of health among the attending students. To do this health profiles are done on the students at NIH at the beginning of their stay and again four months later. Methods and Materials: The subjects consisted of 17 students (4 male and 13 female) at NIH age 19.4 ± 1.3 years, height 172.8 ± 10.3 cm, weight 64.3 ± 10.4 kg. Health profiles were done 11 days after the students started their stay at NIH and final health profiles took place 112 days later. The health profiles consisted of: body composition, blood cholesterol, VO2max estimated by coopers test, lower back and hamstring flexibility measured by YMCA sit-and-reach test, upper arm blood pressure and resting pulse, muscle endurance estimated using pushups and bench trunk-curls and muscle strength estimated by measuring combined grip strength. Results: Health profiles for the average student at NIH at the first and second measurement: Blood cholesterol 4.16 (3.93-6.15) vs. 4.16 (3.98-5.68) mmol/L, body weight 63.8 (51.2-89.2) vs. 64.6 (53.6-90.8) kg, percentage body fat 22.0 ± 9.2 vs. 24.1 ± 9.5 %, systolic blood pressure 108.4 ± 14.9 vs. 109.1 ± 11.7 mmHg, diastolic blood pressure 57.9 ± 10.7 vs. 53.3 ± 9.3, resting pulse 67.2 ± 9.0 vs. 62.8 ± 9.4 beats per minute, estimated VO2max 43.0 ± 5.9 vs. 45.1 ± 7.4 mL*kg-1*min-1, flexibility 42.0 (3-57) vs. 48.0 (7-59) cm, pushups 24.8 ± 12.9 vs. 24.1 ± 14.4 repetitions, bench trunk-curls 54.9 ± 32.1 vs. 72.8 ± 25.3 repetitions, combined grip strength 51.2 (41.9-79.9) vs. 56.1 (43.8-90.7) kg. Discussion: Even though the subjects tripled the amount of time used on physical activity during their stay at NIH compared with the time before their stay the only statistical improvement were the female’s results in the YMCA sit-and-reach test. The subjects stay at NIH can be characterized more as preventive healthcare than promotion of health due to the lack of health improvements. If the subjects manage to continue the active lifestyle they have gained during their stay at NIH the stay would be considered preventive healthcare. To clarify this though a follow up study on the subjects is needed
