Afhandlingen undersøger, om Nicolas Winding Refn kan forstås som en moderne dansk auteur, og hvordan auteurteorien kan opdateres til det 21. århundrede. Udgangspunktet er en gennemgang af den klassiske auteurtradition fra Cahiers du Cinéma med fokus på François Truffaut og André Bazin samt bidrag fra Ian Cameron og Andrew Sarris. Dernæst belyses instruktørens rolle som author/auteur, forskelle mellem art- og mainstreamfilm og de særlige vilkår i den danske filmbranche, hvilket munder ud i en række hypoteser om nutidens auteur. Metodisk anvendes en stilanalyse med vægt på mise-en-scène, kostumer og makeup, lyssætning, karakteriscenesættelse, kameraføring og filmlyd i to af Refns film, Bronson (2008) og Valhalla Rising (2009), suppleret med paralleller til andre værker og en perspektivering til danske samtidige som Lars von Trier og Thomas Vinterberg. Afhandlingen undersøger bl.a. intertekstuelle referencer og tilbagevendende vold som mulige kendetegn for Refns personlige stil samt hvorfor instruktører med auteurtendenser kan opnå både kritisk og kommerciel gennemslagskraft. This thesis examines whether Nicolas Winding Refn can be understood as a modern Danish auteur and how auteur theory might be updated for the 21st century. It begins with a review of the classic auteur tradition from Cahiers du Cinéma, focusing on François Truffaut and André Bazin, and incorporates perspectives from Ian Cameron and Andrew Sarris. The study then explores the director’s role as author/auteur, differences between art and mainstream cinema, and the specific conditions of the Danish film industry, leading to a set of hypotheses about today’s auteur.
