Abstract
This study introduces New Nordic Tinkering, a pedagogical and learning theoretical framework designed to enhance Technology Comprehension. Emphasizing playful and creative learning processes, New Nordic Tinkering focuses on hands-on experimentation, iterative design, and the exploration of materials and ideas. Rooted in social constructivist theory and inspired by the Tinkering Studio methodologies, this research investigates how Tinkering can be integrated into Danish schools to foster creativity, meaningfulness and engagement among students. The approach includes a systematic literature review and empirical data collection through Future Workshops, Mobile Probes, and interviews with teachers. These methods capture the nuanced experiences and reflections of educators implementing Tinkering in their classrooms. The literature review highlights that while Tinkering is well-recognized in informal education settings, its application in formal education is underexplored. This study addresses this gap by applying insights from Dewey, Vygotsky, Piaget, Papert and Resnick to the context of Technology Comprehension and broader educational practices in Danish schools. Key findings show the transformative potential of Tinkering to create engaging, meaningful learning experiences that go beyond traditional education models. This approach fosters a learning environment where failure is seen as valuable, promoting self-efficacy and resilience. The collaborative nature of Tinkering activities builds a strong sense of community and shared purpose. The study concludes with practical recommendations for incorporating New Nordic Tinkering into teaching practices. These include designing flexible, open-ended activities, providing immediate feedback, and prioritizing creativity over standardized outcomes. By embracing the playful, experimental spirit of New Nordic Tinkering, educators can create dynamic learning experiences that enhance students' technology literacy and overall Bildung. This research underscores the importance of integrating creative, hands-on approaches in formal education to prepare students for the complexities of the modern world.
