Abstract

This thesis presents an ethnographic exploration in the use of clinical methods and techniques by danish music therapists in the field of neurorehabilitation. I refer to clinical work of people who have lost communication abilities due to severe apoplexy and consequently acquired brain injury, such as aphasia, dyarthria and apraxia of speech. Further, I explore how music therapists understand the coherence between therapeutic objectives, patient needs and clinical methods and techniques. Findings suggest that clinicians, who have experience in the field, focus on patient needs but attach less importance to the terms methods and techniques in their clinical work than music therapists lacking clinical experience. Last mentioned use clinical methods and techniques, but pay less attention to patient needs. Further, the conclusion indicates, hence the fact that music therapy in the field of neurorehabilitation in particular health service areas, are in need of thorough explanation when it comes to clinical music therapeutic methods and techniques. I suggest, music therapists consider the development of a unifying and common neuro-music therapeutic language, in order to endorse music therapy as a new profession in the field.
