Dette speciale undersøger musikkens rolle i J.R.R. Tolkiens univers og hvordan beskrivelser af musik formidler centrale temaer, særligt temaer om godhed som mod, venskab og håb. Udgangspunktet er musikkens plads fra verdens skabelse i Ainulindäle til sangene og digtene i The Hobbit og The Lord of the Rings. Metodisk kombineres Grounded Theory med tematisk analyse for at arbejde iterativt og nuanceret med tekstens musikskildringer fra The Silmarillion, The Hobbit og The Lord of the Rings, suppleret med et kort blik på James Joyces brug af musik som litterært virkemiddel. Analysen peger på, at Tolkiens nøje ordvalg og symbolske sprog i musikbeskrivelser både implicit og eksplicit udtrykker centrale temaer og narrativ struktur, og at musikken i hans værker fungerer som et transformativt element, der uddyber læserens forbindelser til fortællingen.

This thesis explores the role of music in J.R.R. Tolkien’s world and how musical descriptions convey key themes, with a focus on themes of goodness such as courage, friendship, and hope. It traces music’s function from the creation narrative in Ainulindäle to the songs and poems in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Methodologically, it combines Grounded Theory with Thematic Analysis in an iterative, circular process applied to musical depictions in The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings, contextualized by a brief look at James Joyce’s use of music in literature. The analysis indicates that Tolkien’s careful word choices and symbolic language in musical passages express central themes both implicitly and explicitly and support narrative structure, suggesting that music acts as a transformative element that deepens readers’ engagement with the fiction.
