Abstract
Aim: This master thesis aims to investigate the use of music therapy competencies in and the function of “spontaneously occurred role play” (SpOR) in music therapy, where the use of musical instruments hardly is applied. SpOR is defined by the way certain clients may spontaneously engage in play in music therapy, unlike traditional music-based approaches, SpOR emphasizes the use of roles, where the music therapist will engage on the premises of the client’s imaginative inner world and how the playing unfolds. According to a systematic literature search, carried out in connection with this research study, there is a lack of literature exploring this specific kind of play-phenomenon in music therapy. On this basis, the study focusses on answering research questions about SpOR: How are the competencies of music therapy applied in SpOR, when music isn’t the essential? What importance may SpOR have for clients with psychosocial issues? And can it be argued that SpOR can be applied as a methodological approach in music therapy? Method and design: The study is a qualitative and phenomenological research with a flexible design. The empirical data consist of three video sequences and four extracts from a music therapists notes retrieved from two individual treatment courses. The two courses respectively deal with a young woman at the age of 26 with several mental and relational challenges, and a 9-year-old girl who was late adopted, and her foster mother underwent a difficult cancer procedure. Selected data was transcribed and specified in order to complete a thematic coding analysis. Themes occurred based on the competencies applied by the music therapist that the researchers found to be represented in the data material and were subsequently discussed in relation to theoretical inquiry and included literature. Results and conclusion: The result of the research indicates that the awareness of psychodynamic processes and application of regulation and person-attuned musical interactions (PAMI) in combination are used to facilitate SpOR in music therapy. The client is able to express inner emotions and relationship patterns through SpOR, that can be mirrored, imitated, matched or reflected by the music therapist, who will contribute according to the client’s needs and the overall treatment plan. Based on the findings the client’s psychosocial competencies and emotional awareness is supported and has the ability to develop through a recommended long-term music therapy. On this basis SpOR can be considered as a method in music therapy, although further research is recommended. Keywords: Music therapy, role playing, play, spontaneously, psychodynamic, person attuned musical interaction (PAMI), SpOR.
