Abstract
This project aimed to answer the research question: “How can an action research process aimed at exercise for women with young children help identify psychosocial mechanisms that influence their participation??” The method used in this project is action research, involving the participation of women in two workshops. The mechanisms impacting participation in the training are based, among other factors, on Lisa Berkman's conceptual model, which explains how social networks affects general mental and physical health. In the workshops the theory-driven themes of social support, social engagement, and social influence were explored together with the women. All three themes appeared to significantly influence women's participation in the training community. Women indicated that their social network greatly impacts their decision to participate. Furthermore, the project highlighted how the concept of The Mental Load generally affects women's participation. Although the women did not explicitly mention The Mental Load in the workshops, it turmed out in the analysis as an important factor. This phenomenon describing the invisible burden that some women carry appeared to contrain their leisure time participation, making it crucial to discuss further how sporting communities can be organized to support participation of young women with kids.
