Specialet undersøger, om foreningsidrætten reelt indfrier de politiske forventninger til integration ved at fokusere på flygtninges deltagelse i danske idrætsforeninger. Med et komparativt casestudie i en roklub og en volleyballklub bygger undersøgelsen på seks kvalitative interviews (fire med flygtninge og to med klubformænd) samt deltagende observationer. Det empiriske materiale er analyseret med afsæt i sociologiske perspektiver på fritid, belonging og den typiske danske aktivitetsforening. Analysen peger på, at flygtninges muligheder for at skabe givende sociale relationer i foreningerne påvirkes af flere forhold: sportsligt talent kan styrke adgangen til fællesskabet, og det er vigtigt at kunne indgå i foreningens sociale kultur og normer. Når flygtninge bliver en del af klubfællesskabet, åbner det ofte døre til andre sociale arenaer, og de opnår større indsigt i dansk kultur og traditioner gennem sociale aktiviteter i og omkring foreningen. Konklusionen er, at foreningsidrætten rummer et integrationspotentiale, men at blotte deltagelse ikke er nok; både flygtninge og foreninger må aktivt arbejde for at invitere og inkludere flygtninge i de etablerede sociale fællesskaber, hvis potentialet skal realiseres.
This thesis examines whether voluntary sport clubs actually meet political expectations about their role in integration by focusing on refugees’ participation in Danish club-based sport. Using a comparative two-case study of a rowing club and a volleyball club, the study draws on six qualitative interviews (four with refugee participants and two with club presidents) and participant observations. The empirical material is analyzed through sociological lenses on leisure, belonging, and typical Danish activity-based sport clubs. The analysis indicates that refugees’ chances of building meaningful social ties in clubs depend on several factors: sporting ability can ease entry into the community, and fitting into the club’s social culture and norms matters. When refugees do become part of the club community, they are often invited into other social arenas and gain valuable insight into Danish culture and traditions through social events in and around the clubs. The thesis concludes that voluntary sport clubs have integration potential, but mere participation is not sufficient; both refugees and clubs need to actively foster inclusion into established social communities to realize this potential.
