Specialet undersøger Maria Hellebergs fire slægtsromaner Kvinderne fra Thy (2016), Søstrene fra Thy (2019), Barnet fra Thy (2021) og Teenageren fra Thy (2022), der skildrer fire generationer af kvinder fra oldemoren Mariane til Helleberg selv og spænder fra slutningen af 1800-tallet til 1970’erne. Formålet er at belyse Hellebergs syn på kvindekøn og samfund og at forstå, hvordan værkerne fungerer som en identitetssøgende proces. Med afsæt i genrekonventioner for slægts- og hjemstavnsromanen, den historiske roman og autofiktion samt teorier om kronotop (tid-rum), feministisk litteraturkritik og nyhistorisme, kombineret med nærlæsning, kontekstualisering og komparativ metode, analyserer specialet komposition, plot, fortæller og forfatterkommentarer samt karakteriseringen af Mariane, Marie Dusine, Gerda, Ruth og Helleberg. Analysen viser to fortolkningsspor: som slægts-, familie- og hjemstavnsfortælling, hvor kvindernes indbyrdes bånd og Thys særlige betydning træder frem, og som Hellebergs identitetssøgning gennem erindringerne om kvinderne og deres tilhørsforhold. Samtidig placeres romanerne i en bredere historisk ramme, hvor samtidens kønsroller og normer tydeliggøres, og de giver stemme til de marginaliserede kvinders erfaringer. Dermed bidrager Hellebergs slægtsromaner til den nationale historie set fra kvindernes perspektiv fra slutningen af 1800-tallet til 1970’erne.
This thesis examines Maria Helleberg’s four family-saga novels—Kvinderne fra Thy (2016), Søstrene fra Thy (2019), Barnet fra Thy (2021), and Teenageren fra Thy (2022)—which portray four generations of women, from the great-grandmother Mariane to Helleberg herself, across the period from the late nineteenth century to the 1970s. The aim is to explore Helleberg’s view of women and society and to show how the novels function as an identity-seeking project. Drawing on genre conventions of the lineage/family and hometown novel, the historical novel, and autofiction, and applying the chronotope (time-space), feminist literary criticism, and new historicism, the study combines close reading, contextualization, and comparative methods to analyze composition, plot, narration, authorial intrusions, and the characterization of Mariane, Marie Dusine, Gerda, Ruth, and Helleberg. The analysis supports two readings: as family and hometown narratives that highlight the women’s bonds and the special significance of Thy, and as Helleberg’s personal quest to locate herself within the lineage through memories of the women and their sense of belonging. Situated within a broader historical frame that foregrounds prevailing gender norms, the novels make visible the experiences of marginalized women and thus contribute to Danish national history from a women’s perspective from the late 1800s to the 1970s.
