Abstract
Dette speciale undersøger, om 11-14-årige med en ADHD-diagnose oplever at blive set ned på eller behandlet anderledes i deres sociale relationer på grund af diagnosen. Undersøgelsen bygger på kvalitative, indgående interviews med unge i alderen 11-14 år og tager udgangspunkt i de unges egne fortællinger. De unge forstår overvejende deres diagnose ud fra en biologisk forklaring og gennem de udfordringer, de møder i hverdagen: koncentrationsbesvær, vanskeligheder med at løse opgaver og problemer med at styre temperamentet. Ifølge deres beskrivelser fører disse udfordringer ofte til mobning og til, at klassekammerater ser skævt til dem i skolen. Selvom de unge sjældent bruger ordet “stigmatisering”, beskriver de, at de føler sig miskrediteret—altså sat i bås og tillagt negative egenskaber—på grund af de vanskeligheder, de forbinder med diagnosen. De oplever også selve diagnosen som stigmatiserende, fordi de er tilbageholdende med at fortælle andre om den af frygt for, at andre vil tænke dårligt om dem og tillægge dem egenskaber, som de ikke selv mener at have. Samlet peger undersøgelsen på, at både de konkrete udfordringer i hverdagen og selve diagnoselabelen kan danne grundlag for, at unge med ADHD oplever stigmatisering i deres sociale liv.
This thesis examines whether 11–14-year-olds diagnosed with ADHD feel they are looked down on or treated differently in their social relationships because of the diagnosis. The study is based on qualitative, in-depth interviews with young people aged 11–14 and centers on their own accounts. The participants mostly understand their diagnosis through a biological perspective and through everyday difficulties: trouble concentrating, challenges completing tasks, and difficulties managing their temper. According to their descriptions, these challenges often lead to bullying and to being viewed negatively by peers at school. Although the young people rarely use the term “stigma,” they describe feeling discredited—that is, being put in a box and assigned negative traits—because of the difficulties they associate with the diagnosis. They also experience the diagnostic label itself as stigmatizing, as they are reluctant to disclose it for fear that others will think poorly of them and attribute traits they do not feel they possess. Overall, the study suggests that both everyday difficulties and the diagnostic label can contribute to experiences of stigmatization among young people with ADHD in their social lives.
