Abstract

This thesis investigates how patterns of negative social heritage manifested among students placed at Flakkebjerg and Landerupgaard Reformatory and which factors contributed to the reproduction or disruption of these patterns. The study describes a historical institutional case within sociological theories of social reproduction, habitus, capital and social mobility, thereby linking historical analysis with broader theoretical discussion on social heritage and pattern-breaking. The thesis applies a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative and qualitative analyses of archival material from Flakkebjerg and Landerupgaard Reformatory. A quantitative analysis identifies general patterns and correlations between selected background factors and later life outcomes. This is complemented by qualitative analyses of individual life histories, which provide insight into how institutional experiences and personal resources shaped the students life during and after their placement at the reformatory. The conclusion demonstrates that negative social heritage emerges through a complex interaction of multiple factors rather than a single deterministic cause. While all examined background factors show some statistical correlation with the reproduction of negative heritage, parental neglect and parental occupational and social background display the strongest associations. In contrast, age at placement and parental civil status show weaker correlation.
