Specialet undersøger, hvordan samfundsudviklingen i den danske konkurrencestat påvirker gymnasieelevers stress, og hvordan socialt arbejde kan støtte disse unge, med fokus på organisationen Headspace. Undersøgelsen er et indlejret enkeltcasestudie baseret på tre semistrukturerede interviews med Headspace-medarbejdere (to i direkte ungerådgivning og én presse- og kommunikationskonsulent) og inddrager samtidig relevant forskningslitteratur. Analysen kobler makroforandringer som politiske reformer, globalisering og teknologisk udvikling med unges hverdagsliv og trækker på teoretiske perspektiver fra Ove Kaj Pedersen (konkurrencestaten), Anders Petersen (præstationssamfundet), Hartmut Rosa (social acceleration og fremmedgørelse) og Axel Honneth (anerkendelse). Specialet peger på, at flere forhold bidrager til høje stressniveauer, men at en dominerende ungdomskultur præget af konstant konkurrence og præstationskrav er særligt belastende. Denne kultur forstås som et resultat af skiftet mod konkurrencestaten og den teknologiske udvikling, der intensiverer forventninger og tempo. I praksis er problemet vanskeligt at imødegå, men socialt arbejde bør hjælpe unge med at modstå samfundspresset, styrke deres modstandsdygtighed og understøtte en tilstrækkelig selvrealisering. I Headspace fremhæves især en indsats, der genopretter anerkendelse i Honneths private, retlige og solidariske sfærer, for at styrke identitet og trivsel.

This thesis examines how the development of Denmark’s competitive state affects high school students’ stress and how social work can support them, with a focus on the organization Headspace. The study is an embedded single case study drawing on three semi-structured interviews with Headspace staff (two frontline counselors and one press and communications consultant) and relevant research literature. The analysis links macro-level changes—political reforms, globalization, and technological development—to young people’s everyday lives, using theoretical perspectives from Ove Kaj Pedersen (the competitive state), Anders Petersen (the performance society), Hartmut Rosa (social acceleration and alienation), and Axel Honneth (recognition). Findings indicate multiple contributors to elevated stress, with a dominant youth culture of constant competition and performance demands being particularly harmful. This culture is seen as a product of the shift toward the competitive state and technological acceleration, which amplify expectations and pace. Practically, the issue is hard to counter, but social work should help young people withstand societal pressure, build resilience, and achieve adequate self-realization. At Headspace, efforts that restore recognition in Honneth’s private, legal, and solidarity spheres are highlighted as a way to support identity and well-being.
