Dette speciale undersøger, hvordan dansk-iranere oplever og håndterer konflikt i Iran, og hvordan disse erfaringer former deres identitet og følelse af at høre til i både Danmark og Iran. Med udgangspunkt i Nira Yuval-Davis’ teori om tilhørsforhold og tilhørspolitikker samt Robin Cohens teori om diasporiske identiteter analyserer vi, hvordan politiske begivenheder og grænsedragninger skaber muligheder og barrierer for at føle tilhør. Empirisk bygger specialet på 20 kvalitative interviews med dansk-iranere på tværs af generationer. Analysen peger på en tydelig sammenhæng mellem konflikt i Iran og konstruktionen af tilhørsforhold og identitet, herunder at mange deltager i protester og andre handlinger og oplever normer og forventninger om at engagere sig – særligt ved bestemte vendepunkter i diasporaen. Disse vendepunkter tydeliggør også dybe politiske skel i den dansk-iranske diaspora. Familien spiller en central rolle i at skabe og videreføre kollektive fortællinger og politisk bevidsthed, og konflikt i Iran kan både styrke og svække følelsesmæssige tilknytninger til forskellige nationale og etniske grupper. Endelig viser specialet, at muligheden for at skabe tilhør til både Danmark og Iran i nogen grad begrænses af tilhørspolitikker og sociale grænser, hvilket indskriver de danske erfaringer i en bredere transnational kontekst præget af geopolitik, racialisering og diskrimination.
This thesis examines how Danish-Iranians experience and manage conflict in Iran, and how these experiences shape their identities and sense of belonging in both Denmark and Iran. Drawing on Nira Yuval-Davis’ theory of belonging and politics of belonging and Robin Cohen’s theory of diasporic identities, it explores how political events and boundary-making create opportunities and constraints for feeling at home. The empirical basis consists of 20 qualitative interviews with Danish-Iranians across generations. The analysis identifies a clear link between conflict in Iran and the construction of belonging and identity, including widespread participation in protest and other actions and felt norms and expectations to engage—especially at certain turning points for the diaspora. These moments also highlight deep political fractures within the Danish-Iranian diaspora. Families are central in producing and reproducing collective narratives and political consciousness, and conflict in Iran can both strengthen and weaken emotional attachments to different national and ethnic groups. Finally, the thesis shows that the ability to build a sense of belonging to both Denmark and Iran is partly limited by politics of belonging and social boundaries, situating the Danish experiences within a broader transnational context marked by geopolitics, racialization, and discrimination.
