Abstract
Dette studie undersøger, hvorfor nogle unge, talentfulde atleter stopper tidligt, sat i relation til eksisterende viden om talentudvikling og frafald. Tre tidligere højtpræsterende atleter deltog: to mænd (en elite-landevejsrytter og en verdensklasse-banerytter) og en kvinde (elitesvømmer). Hver deltager gennemførte et individuelt narrativt interview, hvor de fortalte deres egen historie. Interviewene blev transskriberet og analyseret i to trin: først som personlige biografier og derefter ved at identificere fælles temaer, set i lyset af tidligere forskning. På tværs af deltagernes fortællinger beskrev de lignende grunde til at forlade sporten: det daglige pres ved at kombinere den træningsmængde, der kræves for at holde niveauet, med fuldtidsuddannelse eller arbejde, samt forhold i deres miljø, som ikke fuldt ud støttede talentudvikling. Det omfattede sociale forhold som begrænset støtte fra jævnaldrende eller udfordringer i relationen til træneren, samt manglende sammenhæng mellem sport og livet uden for sporten. Studiet har til formål at hjælpe unge atleter med at reflektere over deres valg og at inspirere til indsatser, der kan forebygge tidligt frafald.
This study explores why some young, talented athletes stop competing early, considered alongside existing research on talent development and dropout. Three former high-performing athletes took part: two men (one elite road cyclist and one world-class track cyclist) and one woman (elite swimmer). Each completed an individual narrative interview in which they told their own story. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed in two steps: first as personal biographies and then by identifying common themes, considered with prior scientific work. Across their accounts, participants described similar reasons for leaving sport: the daily strain of combining the training volume needed to maintain performance with full-time education or a job, and aspects of their environment that did not fully support talent development. These included social factors such as limited support from peers or challenges in the coach–athlete relationship, and weak coordination between sport and life outside sport. The study aims to help young athletes reflect on their choices and to inform efforts to prevent early dropout.
