Specialet undersøger, hvordan magt fungerer i Amalie Skrams psykiatriromaner fra 1895. Med udgangspunkt i romanernes skildringer af patient, læge og hospital viser analysen, hvordan den psykiatriske institution afspejler datidens mandligt dominerede samfundsorden. Begrebet “patriarkalske strukturer” forstås her som normer og beslutningsmagt, der primært lå hos mænd og formede kvinders handlemuligheder. Dermed kobles romanernes hospitalsmiljø til bredere sociale forhold i slutningen af 1800-tallet.

This thesis examines how power operates in Amalie Skram’s psychiatric novels from 1895. Drawing on the novels’ depictions of patient, doctor, and hospital, the analysis shows how the psychiatric institution mirrors the male-dominated social order of the period. Here, “patriarchal structures” are understood as norms and decision-making power held mainly by men, which shaped women’s possibilities for action. In this way, the hospital setting in the novels is linked to broader social conditions in the late nineteenth century.
