This thesis investigates how the introduction of the International Standard on Auditing for Audits of Financial Statements of Less Complex Entities (ISA for LCE) affects audit quality and documentation in the audit of less complex entities in Denmark. Taking the auditor’s perspective and focusing on the SME segment, the study uses a post‑positivist approach that combines qualitative interviews with three audit professionals and secondary empirical material issued by the IAASB and FSR. The thesis describes ISA for LCE as a standalone and professionally sound auditing standard that preserves the fundamental principles of the full ISAs – including reasonable assurance, professional scepticism and sufficient appropriate audit evidence – while simplifying and tailoring requirements to the typical risk profile of less complex entities. The analysis shows that the standard primarily reduces the volume and complexity of related guidance material, while substantially retaining the core documentation requirements, and that the most pronounced changes arise in the planning and risk assessment phases, where the removal of requirements linked to complex audit matters allows auditors to focus more directly on the entity’s actual risks. ISA for LCE supports audit quality through explicit eligibility assessments, the removal of irrelevant requirements and an unchanged focus on verifiability through documentation; however, overall quality continues to depend heavily on the auditor’s professional judgement and scepticism and on the methodological and quality control framework within which the standard is applied. The thesis also finds that practical adoption of ISA for LCE in Denmark remains limited, due to factors such as the lack of dedicated audit methodologies, the availability of the national alternative of extended review, and a circular dynamic between audit firms, FSR and the Danish Business Authority in which no actor perceives a strong incentive to lead implementation. It concludes that ISA for LCE has substantial potential to make audits of less complex entities more proportionate and efficient without reducing the level of assurance, but that realising this potential requires coordinated action from key stakeholders and a sufficient level of professional maturity and internal quality systems to support its principle‑based approach.
