Abstract

This thesis explores patterns in 23 intimate partner homicides in Denmark through a qualitative analysis of court documents. The aim is to develop an analytical understanding of the phenomenon by identifying recurring characteristics among perpetrators, relationship dynamics, conflict types, and by constructing a typology of cases. The study finds that perpetrators are primarily middle-aged men, many of whom suffer from mental illness, are socially marginalized, or have a history of alcohol abuse. Suicidal thoughts and attempts are also common. The analysis of relationship characteristics reveals that most homicides occur in long-term relationships, often marked by physical or psychological violence, control, and conflicts. However, the findings also show that partner homicides can occur in seemingly stable relationships, where violence escalates in connection with separation, jealousy, or loss of control. Five main types of conflict are identified: separation, infidelity, disputes over children, division of property, and substance abuse. Based on the analysis, the thesis presents a typology of five homicide types: existential crisis, control-related homicide, crime of passion, homicide linked to severe mental illness, and escalation of violence. This typology provides a framework for understanding the variation in partner homicides and may inform future prevention efforts. The results of the analysis will be discussed and put into perspective by comparing the findings with other populations, other research, and previously incorporated theory. In addition, the discussion will address the quality of the study with a focus on limitations, data quality, selection bias, and the external validity of the study. The study concludes that it is possible to identify patterns in intimate partner homicide cases, supporting the thesis’ research question. It also highlights the need for preventive measures focusing on the perpetrator’s mental health and social situation. Future research should test the proposed typology on a larger dataset to assess its validity and applicability in broader contexts.
