Abstract
Aim: This systematic review aims to investigate the effects of interventions on the reduction of anxiety symptoms in children (age 6-16) with subclinical anxiety. This systematic review therefore only includes interventions where the primary goal is to reduce anxiety symptoms. Background: Over the past years, the incidence of anxiety disorders has slightly increased making anxiety the most frequently occurring psychiatric disorder in Denmark. There is a need for preventive interventions before subclinical anxiety develops into anxiety disorders. Children with subclinical anxiety have elevated levels of anxiety symptoms but do not meet the criteria for diagnosing anxiety disorder. Knowledge about what characterizes these interventions and the efficacy of these interventions on children with subclinical anxiety is therefore needed. Method: This systematic review follows the PRISMA (2020) guidelines. PsycNet and PubMed were searched February 21st, 2024, using four search blocks, including 1) area of interest (subclinical anxiety), 2) study design (RCT), 3) treatment (intervention), and 4) treatment group (children). The final search resulted in a total of 9.328 articles eligible for inclusion. The final number of included articles in this systematic review was 16. Results: The results in the included studies are ambiguous. This systematic review includes interventions that are with both online and physical appearance, in groups and individually, and with intervention duration between 3 and 12 weeks. The included studies vary in their conclusions ranging from none to large effects but either way the anxiety symptoms decrease after intervention. This indicates that there may be other factors that can influence the efficacy of these interventions. We highlight selected elements such as motivation, barriers, and the etiology of anxiety. Conclusion: The discussion in this systematic review is divided in three main subjects, including results, moderators, and methods. The discussion indicates that no matter the type, length, and theoretical foundation of the interventions, the included studies found a decrease in anxiety symptoms. This indicates that almost no matter what kind of intervention the children received they found a decrease in their anxiety symptoms.
