Abstract

This thesis investigates the interdisciplinary collaboration within the psychiatric treatment sector in “Region Hovedstadens Psykiatri” (RHP). The study is based on the perspective of the nursing profession, utilizing nurses' narratives and experiences of practice as primary empirical data. The interest in this field arises from previous research, which has primarily focused on collaboration across sectors, leaving a gap in studies specifically examining the psychiatric treatment within the regions. The thesis is a case study focusing on “Region Hovedstadens Psykiatri” three-year plan for unit-oriented interventions and how interdisciplinary collaboration in this context contributes to ensuring holistic care. It is a qualitative study with a hermeneutic scientific approach to the phenomenon. The findings in this thesis are thus an interpretation of the practice as reported by nurses. This interpretation is supplemented with theory and methodology to ensure objectivity. There is a focus on different levels of understanding and a methodological approach to comprehending interdisciplinary work, inspired by Ejrnæs and Svendsen (2021), along with a theoretical framework based on Pierre Bourdieu's practice theory (Bourdieu, 1997). First, the methods are described, emphasizing transparency based on hermeneutics. This is followed by a detailed description of the data processing, which includes transcriptions of 60 pages of interviews with 4 different respondents. Concept-driven codes and user-driven codes were used in the process. Subsequently, the case study and the three-year plan, which guide the entire thesis, are unfolded. The thesis is divided into three analytical parts. The first part focuses on the functions and dysfunctions of interdisciplinary collaboration. The second part examines how Bourdieu's (1997) concepts of habitus and capital manifest in nursing practice. These parts form the basis for the third part, which analyzes how habitus and capitals affect the maintenance of functions and dysfunctions in collaboration. The study concludes that there are generally three types of habitus, including a general one, one in the outpatient setting, and one in the emergency department, all of which affect the goals of the three-year plan and the maintenance of functions and dysfunctions. Nurses generally possess a significant amount of cultural capital through education and experience, which is crucial for maintaining functions. Their symbolic capital seems to impact their work but does not influence the three-year plan. Additionally, social capital is shown to be significant for interdisciplinary collaboration and the maintenance of functions. However, when there is a low level of social capital, dysfunctions are sustained.
