Abstract
This project explores how artists can create shapes in virtual environments and how digital tools can better support artistic ways of working. We analyzed drawing principles, observed how a ceramic artist and a glassblower shape objects in the physical world, reviewed related literature, and asked a 3D graphics artist to model some of the same objects in the 3D software Maya. We found that no single design paradigm—that is, no single approach or method—could cover all the needs of artistic shape design. In response, we designed a flexible platform that can host multiple paradigms through modules and plug-ins. We integrated third-party software to handle hardware input and geometric computations. Because of time constraints, we implemented only part of the system. As a proof-of-concept for our approach to artistic shape design, we implemented the modeling paradigm Surface Drawing.
