Denne afhandling undersøger, hvordan virksomheder leder samarbejder på tværs af organisationer, og hvilke udfordringer det giver. Den vurderer transaktionsomkostningsteorien (TCT) som rettesnor for at designe styrings- og kontrolpakker – den samlede kombination af kontrakter, processer, målinger og relationer, der bruges til at styre partnerskaber. Afhandlingen afdækker også, hvordan et ressourcebaseret perspektiv (RBV) og institutionel teori kan forbedre dette design og give en mere helhedsorienteret forståelse. Metodisk bygger studiet på kritisk realisme og er et deskbaseret litteraturstudie, der gennemgår og sammenfatter videnskabelige artikler for at opnå en bredere forståelse af interorganisatoriske relationer og kontrolpakke-design. Resultaterne peger på, at TCT alene – med fokus på at minimere koordinations- og sikringsomkostninger – overser vigtige forhold. This thesis examines how organizations manage collaborations with other organizations and the challenges that arise. It evaluates transaction cost theory (TCT) as a guide for designing management control packages—the combined set of contracts, processes, metrics, and relationships used to steer partnerships—and explores how adding the resource-based view (RBV) and institutional theory can improve that design and provide a more holistic understanding. Methodologically, the study adopts critical realism and uses desk-based literature review, synthesizing academic articles to build a broader view of inter-organizational relations and control package design. The findings suggest that relying on TCT alone—focused on minimizing coordination and safeguarding costs—misses important aspects. When combined with RBV, firms can better align controls with their own resources and strategic goals, and institutional theory adds insight into the social norms, rules, and cultural influences that shape cooperation. Together, TCT, RBV, and institutional theory support a more holistic control package design that protects transactions, supports strategy, and fits the social context of collaboration.
