Specialet undersøger, hvordan Instagram kan anvendes som indsamlingsplatform på arkiver til at indsamle sociale digitale fotografier, der dokumenterer byrum. Udgangspunktet er den participatoriske arkivtilgang og den fjerde paradigmatiske bølge (med fokus på brugerinvolvering), samt det nordiske initiativ Collecting Social Photo, hvor kulturarvsinstitutioner eksperimenterer med nye arbejdsgange. Forskningsspørgsmålet er, hvordan Instagram praktisk kan bruges til indsamling og hvilke erfaringer og overvejelser, der kan understøtte bevaring og formidling af dette materiale. Metodisk bygger specialet på casestudier af danske og et svensk initiativ (arkiver og museer), hvor tidligere og nyere forsøg med Instagram som indsamlingskanal analyseres på tværs af tilbagevendende temaer. Analysen samler eksisterende erfaringer og peger på centrale opmærksomhedspunkter som indsamlingens struktur, rollefordeling og samarbejde, kommunikation med brugere, motivvalg samt proveniens og dokumentation. Da feltet fortsat er eksperimentelt, præsenterer specialet ikke en endelig metode, men udmønter sig i et erfaringsbaseret grundlag, der kan informere udviklingen af fremtidige retningslinjer og praksisser i arkivsektoren.

This thesis explores how Instagram can be used by archival institutions as a collecting platform for social digital photographs that document urban spaces. It is framed by the participatory archive perspective and Terry Cook’s fourth paradigm (emphasizing user engagement), and informed by the Nordic initiative Collecting Social Photo, in which heritage institutions experiment with new work practices. The research question asks how Instagram can practically support collecting and what experiences and considerations can guide the preservation and communication of such material. Methodologically, the study analyzes case studies from Danish and one Swedish initiative (archives and museums), reviewing earlier and recent attempts to use Instagram for collecting and comparing recurring themes. The analysis consolidates existing experiences and highlights key considerations such as collection structures, roles and partnerships, communication with users, choice of subjects, and provenance and documentation. As the field remains experimental, the thesis does not propose a definitive method; instead, it offers an experience-based foundation to inform future guidelines and practices in the archival sector.
