Abstract
This report investigates the occurrence of medications found in sewage at Danish wastewater treatment plants with further emphasis on the occurrence of antibiotics. The study demonstrates the detection of antibiotics in Danish sewage and investigates the methods used to remove antibiotics in sewage and the consequences antibiotics have when present in sewage. The occurrence of antibiotics in sewage leads to favorable conditions for bacteria to develop resistance against antibiotics. Bacterial resistance against antibiotics makes elimination of bacteria more difficult if infected by a pathogenic bacterium. Identified treatment methods for removing antibiotics in sewage are membrane technology, membrane bioreactors, advanced oxidation processes, adsorption and biological aerated filters.
