Abstract
This study examined why Syrian refugee women in Denmark fall behind in the labor market, even though they often have higher education than men. Because integration is central to refugee well-being, the project explored how Danish integration and gender equality conditions shape women’s entry into work. Using a mixed-methods, constructivist design, the study combined surveys and in-depth interviews with open-ended questions. A thematic analysis of the responses identified recurring barriers: cultural and traditional norms, religious practices, gender inequality, Danish language challenges, and limited job experience. Some participants also pointed to work-related government policies as obstacles. Finally, several raised concerns about how the Danish education system supports labor market integration, citing limited effectiveness for refugee women, mismatches between existing skills and labor demands, slow routes into work, lack of job guarantees, and a market preference for higher academic credentials.
