Abstract

This thesis reports on a design project carried out in collaboration with two product design studios. The project explores how product design can create more sustainable impact and how practitioners can connect their day-to-day work to higher-level, strategic efforts in design for sustainability. Using an approach from Science and Technology Studies (STS), which examines how science, technology, and society shape each other, the researchers studied and supported this transition in practice. Two case studies based on interviews and participant observation mapped different design processes and identified opportunities to include more sustainable choices. Drawing on established knowledge and insights from these cases, the team presented a framework for sustainability in product design and developed a design specification for a design solution. Through a systematic and iterative design synthesis with the project collaborators, they also created a three-tier framework for teaching sustainability in product design called Sustainable Thinking.
